Lotan was a son of Seir the Horite and a chief of the land of Edom (Genesis 36:20,29;1 Chronicles 1:38). He had a sister named Timna (Genesis 36:22;1 Chronicles 1:39). Lotan is listed among the descendants of Esau who settled in the region of Seir (Genesis 36:20-30;1 Chronicles 1:38-42). The Horites were the original inhabitants of Seir before Esau's descendants displaced them (Deut2.12). As a chief of Edom, Lotan likely held a position of authority and influence among his people.
